Research Excursion Potential Topics

One thing mentioned in the novel that I would like to research is the Shariah camp. The first time I saw this mentioned I thought it was a religious camp to grow someone’s faith in Islam, but the more I think about it the more I find it to probably be more of a camp that is built to manipulate someone based on their religion to become more extreme and more likely to listen to orders that are extreme.

Another thing I would like to potentially research is the Bagram camp for prisoners. Based on what I read in the book, it seems to be an extremely torturous camp that was made to house terrorists, but I would like to learn more about the specific torture methods used if people escaped, and if it was specifically for terrorists or if anyone who breaks the law could be in the camp.

Something mentioned in the novel that I’m also interested in is “Googling while Muslim”. Aneeka mentions this phrase multiple times throughout the novel and although I have not seen any proof it exists, I am interested to see whether it actually does exist. I want to see the implications of googling certain topics while being Muslim and see if this may even translate to other groups of people or if it is only for Muslims.

One last thing that caught my eye was when Isma mentioned the 7/7 terrorists to Dr. Shah. The terrorists were British, but mentioned in the media as British Muslims. I want to learn what are the 7/7 terrorists, what did they do, and why the news media portrayed them as such.

  1. Hey Paulos, I was actually having similar thoughts on what exactly one would do at the Shariah camp. Would they just be based on religious manipulation or would they also teach them military technique while justifying their actions? Thank you for suggesting these different topics for the research excursion.

  2. These are great research questions. I am particularly interested in the Shariah camps. These camps seemed to be important to the recruitment and training process but they were not expanded on and we were never taken through Parvaiz's experience being there. It would be super interesting to learn what happened there, how it could have influenced Parvaiz, and then look at Parvaiz's efforts to come home as a possible failure of the camp and the whole brainwashing process.
